From the Maverick letters

p.197 Mary Maverick, in San Antonio, to son Willie, May 21, 1865
Yours of 13th told me you had been sick a week of flux, [that you were] in hospital and taking no medicine. I don't know if you are right in that. I always use remedies. We had it here badly, several cases, & I found the best things to be [to] lie in bed & take injection of cold or cool slippery elm with
a little oil & sweet milk in it. I gave small quantity at a time, directly after each passage, & gave first 1 spoon sweet oil burnt brandy or nog by the mouth. It is very weakening if you let it run on & I'm afraid dangerous--Dr. Houston said he had to give calomel for it, at his house.
