I think now it is a federal offense to willingly destroy cash, isn't it? I wonder if during the 1860s this was acceptable? I wonder, if for instance, you paid for a 50 cent item with a dollar bill, you could receive half a bill as change? Seems rather unlikely, but they were doing sillier things with money back then.
