Okay, what's proper, males AND female?

Nightshirts for men and nightgowns for women.

and the designs, same off the shoulder??? guess its difficult to find pics of these types of items

No, nightgowns were less like a chemise and more like a shirt. I have found some photos and I think I have some of originals. They're at home; I'll look tonight.
