I have come across references to this book in several diary and letter entries, Vicar of Wakefield; has anyone read it? It's probably one of those classics I should be intimately familiar with, but it only sounds vaguely familiar.
yep, I've read it...it was an 18th century novel (Oliver Goldsmith) and incredibly popular in the 19th century as well...it's even mentioned in some of the classic lit of the 19th century.
And the whole thing is on googlebooks, I see.
Though occasionally bawdy, were ladies supposed to read Shakespear's plays in our time period?
I think so. I remember reading mentions of Shakespeare in letters and diaries; don't have exact quotes at the moment though.
