Farmers of the 1850s relied on beasts of burden to cultivate a life from the soil. During the “Beasts of Burden” program, visitors will have the opportunity to see one team of draught horses, mules and two teams of oxen working a field to prepare it for planting. The tools that will be utilized are a plow, cultivator and harrow of the time period.
This event will be held at Barrington Living History Farm, February 11-12, 2012, located at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historical Park off Highway 105 between Navasota and Brenham on FM 1155. It has been worked out that we will be able to use this as an hands on learning opportunity. It is required that we must be in period clothes and we will only work with the oxen.
