Another quote from _Letters from Forest Place_, page 250, dated Austin, August 27, 1861:
"I am out of snuff and am trying to quit using it. It is such an
ungly, inconvenient and injurious practice. I hope you [her younger sister] never will indulge in the filthy habit. Do my sister, take the advice of one who knows the evils of such practice. There is none that I like at but at one place in town, and (owing to the blockade) they ask 35 cents for it, and I do not feel like encouraging men who rise on their goods these days. Perhaps I will quit--can't tell yet."
