From the Maverick letters

p.100 Mary Maverick in San Antonio, to son Lewis, February 2, 1864
Col Ford called in the other day & I gave him a nice carpet haversack. Pa told Joe Sunday to take our little cannon--have it rifled & carry to Eagle Pass (mounted). He was delighted & will do it if he can & return it to us after the war. ... I was very much occupied during the haversack rage--had 10 times as much of it to do as most of the others. Samuel asked us to make 1,000 for Ford; but Mrs. M decided to let the poor women have the job--for so few had really worked at our 438 that it was hard on them & would be the same.
