Jim Lauderdale

Here's what I have for Spring Heirloom Gardens, which is what we would have for this event.

January Planting Calendar

Carrots go into a nice spot with loose soil and successive plantings can continue through March 1st. Tobacco seeds should be started in trays inside. Peppers and Tomatoes may also be started in cups inside.

February Planting Calendar

Beets, cabbage, collards, sweet corn and lettuce are planted. Successive plantings for beets, cabbaged, and lettuce can continue through March.

March Planting Calendar

Corn, watermelon, eggplant, snap bush and pole beans go in the ground with successive plantings until May 1st. Christmas limas are planted until April 15th. Summer and winter squash, potatoes and peanuts are planted. Peppers and tomatoes started indoors are ready to be transplanted into the garden. Tobacco may also be ready to be transplanted into the fields.

April Planting Calendar

Sweet Potato slips can be planted until May 15th. Pumpkins can be planted until April 20th. After April 1st the cotton and okra can be planted.

May Planting Calendar

The flowers are blooming and we are harvesting our vegetables for the hearth cooking in the kitchen. The peaches are ripe and rye is being harvested the old fashioned way.

Great info Jim, thanks! Keep these in mind as we think about what foods to bring.
