Mary Maverick from San Antonio to son Willie, December 20, 1863, p. 92
Mrs. Urban leaves Tuesday morning to see her sons in Bastrop--your school--& she offers to take anything I wish to send you, so I will make you a birthday-cake tomorrow & be very glad of the chance to send it.
Mary Maverick from San Antonio to son Willie, September 8, 1864, p. 166
I intended surely to have written to you yesterday--but it was George's birthday, & after Mary came from school, we made a cake & I forgot till too late, so I write today by Austin in the morning mail. Everybody & the pet animals had a piece of Georgie's cake, & we had brandy-peaches & a quince big as your fist from Vance's some days ago & kept in a kind of hope that
George might happen home.
Mary Maverick from San Antonio to son Willie, March 23, 1865, p. 179
I received your letter yesterday, also those from Lewis and George. It is now past 3 P.M. I have been all day putting togther your things in your trunk and making cake for you and for Lewis's birthday. We have just eaten dinner, had cake & custard to Lewis's health and every little darkie in the lot eat some of Mas[ter] Lewis's cake.
