I just found an interesting entry in the Houston Tri-Weekly Telegraph, October 1862 transcribed by Vicki Betts. The article is a descrïption of Galveston. The paragraph is describing the condition of gardens with the absence of the locals.
"...and many of the oranges, lemons, BANANAS [emphasis mine], etc., have been taken in an unripe state."
Even if the trees were ornamental and bananas weren't found in the interior, some of us portraying Texans, it seems, can be lucky enough to have bananas.
