I have just started reading A Frontier Texas Mercantile: The History of Gibbs Brothers and Company, Huntsville, 1841-1940. Only a small portion of the book addresses the time period of this forum but so far it provides some great tidbits on how business was conducted and the types of goods available.

Not as good as I had hoped. Very little prior to 1870s.
