You might be interested in this website for the Robertson Plantation established in 1854, house completed in 1860 and still a working ranch.

I am glad they are putting information up on line. It will be interesting to see what they put under "Special Events". The "servant's quarters" mentioned on the first page of the web page are pre-Civil War slave quarters as documented in "Back of the Big House: The Architecture of Plantation Slavery" on pages 224-227. This is one of the only antebellum plantations in the state with its original quarters still intact.

Gene Smith and I were up at Robertson Plantation in April for a small tour for the historical commission in Salado. The family members who now own the plantation seem very cognizant of the treasure they have. The house does need work - but what house doesn't? It is really amazing as a time capsule from the 19th century. There is some planning to open the downstairs of the house for tours the weekend of October 25 (that's Salado's Heritage weekend). If I get any details, I'll pass them along.
