"Texas Roots: Agriculture and Rural Life Before the Civil War" by C. Allan Jones.

The book gives pretty good background of Texas, duh, before the Civil War. There are great descrïptions of what the 1840 emmigrants
experienced as well as information on farming and stock raising. I'm finding great general information; I think it would be especially helpful for male impressions as it deals mostly with farming and agriculture.
