One thing that I have tended to carry at reenactments too is a few pieces of pre-1860 US coinage purchased at coin shows and antique dealers. they are not in great shape, and some are as early as 1848, but think how long we all carried wheat pennies around... The coins I carry were not very expensive, I don't think I ever paid more than about $8.00 for one. While I wouldn't actually spend them with a merchant, it does give me the ability to have some appropriate 'pocket change' to carry in a time period when few people were cash rich in actual currency.
