TEXAS SESQUICENTENNIAL OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR WORKSHOP
LAREDO, Texas—The Texas Historical Commission (THC), in conjunction with the Webb County Heritage Foundation will co-host a Texas Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Initiative workshop on Palmito Ranch Battlefield National Historic Landmark (NHL) and the Texas border during the Civil War on Thursday, August 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. This program is the second of three planned for 2011, across the state, in an effort to showcase THC assets that tell the story of Palmito Ranch Battlefield NHL and Texas during the Civil War, and is made possible by a grant from the Society of the Order of the Southern Cross. This program also marks the opening of a new exhibit at the Villa Antigua Border Heritage Museum titled, “Laredo, Texas and the American Civil War,” and will include a presentation by Dr. Jerry Thompson of Texas A&M International University about the Texas border during the war.

BACKGROUND: The THC established a Sesquicentennial Initiative with the goal of increasing public understanding of its programs that both enhance the interpretation of Palmito Ranch Battlefield NHL and assist with the preservation of the history of Texas’ role in this seminal event in American history.
